NEW YORK — Stocks rose Wednesday on upbeat news from big companies: a patent settlement by Bristol-Myers Squibb, strong earnings from Morgan Stanley and a cost-cutting deal between General Motors Corp., Delphi Corp. and the United Auto Workers.

Toshiba wins patent ruling in Hynix case (International Herald Tribune)
Toshiba won a patent infringement case Friday against its South Korean rival Hynix Semiconductor, which was ordered by a Tokyo court to halt sales of NAND flash memory chips in Japan.
